They Say That I have SPRING FEVER!

Highlights all of Tara Tag’s Upcoming Events Plus Her Understudy Tale in making her
Walnut Street Main Stage Theatre Debut last month!

And a little extra…

.now.

I CAN’T READ MUSIC!

THIS SATURDAY AT 7PM AT THE DUPLEX!

A little spoiler to get you all revved up! Ladies and Gentleman, my ladies who couldn’t read a single note of music:

I have my Mary Jane taps(a few sizes bigger than the last pair I wore!) and a classic 50s style swing dress, being sassed up my first crinoline skirt, ready to spin! I got bows to put in my hair, ditties to tap and sway to, ballads to croon, hoots to holler, and stories to share plus the best director and music director making the Duplex feel like my home for an hour. Here is my bio featured on my director/producer John D. Forslund’s website:

A New Jersey native and an old musical comedy soul since childhood, a young Tara Tagliaferro began her solo cabaret career touring her grandparents’ basements and living rooms, selling out every couch and recliner as she showcased hits from musicals such as Grease, Joseph...Dreamcoat, and West Side Story, plus a spectacular one-woman version of the opening number in A Chorus Line (home videos available). Tara grew up consistently entertaining her family and stuffed animals, singing and tapping alongside Shirley Temple tapes, MGM musicals replayed on TV, and crackly old Broadway records as well as driving with her folks to NY to see her favorite shows live. She found nothing to be more magical. When she began performing in school plays and community theatre, she became instantly addicted to the audience laughter and constantly craved that joyful escape she found theatre to bring to herself and loved ones. Now many summer theatre camps and stocks (even one spent as a singing waitress!) and a BFA in musical theatre later, Tara could not be happier to still be true to the dreams and big imagination she had as a little girl. Landing in Philadelphia right after her graduation to fulfill a season long acting apprenticeship with America’s oldest regional theatre the Walnut Street Theatre, Tara has been blessed to perform in their Main Stage and Studio seasons, Kids Series, and with their Touring Outreach Company as well as with other regional companies in Philly, which she now calls home. She has also began work as a teaching artist through the Walnut’s Education Department, choreographing her first school show for the Walnut Adopt-a-School this spring. Please visit www.taratag.com to see what’s on the horizon next as she bounces between Philly and New York adventures. Tara could not be more thrilled to go out on a whim this New Year and share her story in her NYC one-woman cabaret debut with JD Productions! Always thanks to her beyond amazing family, beyond amazing friends, and beyond amazing boyfriend in which everything would be nothing without. For love!

Click HERE for more information! Get in touch with me if you’d like to make a reservation or click that lovely link. I want you there! I am so excited to be bringing together my friends, family, and mentors from college, summer stock, Philly, my hometown, and the Big Apple all under one roof. It’s insane to me. There will be no happier girl in the world on March 24th!

11TH HOUR THEATRE COMPANY ROCK MASTERCLASS

And now for something entirely different…

On Monday March 26th, I’ll be performing at the Twisted Tail located in Philly’s Queen Village in what I’m calling PHILLY ROCKS JR. brought to you by the 11th Hour Theatre Company. Before the concert, which starts at 8:30, I’ll be doing a master class with the company artistic director Mike O’Brien and resident rock beltress Alex Keiper on owning our rock songs of choice to be sung with…drum roll please…a LIVE BAND! Since I have a pop/rock spring coming my way (scroll down to see!), I am stoked to be giving myself this challenge. Can’t wait to put on my new heel boots and dive into unchartered Tara Tag rock ‘n roll territory. Who knows what will come out?! May be there is an inner punk queen in there somewhere. HEAD BANG!

TARA TAG AS A BROADWAY SEASON GREETER FOR THE KIMMEL CENTER

I’m so excited for this! And you should just go see it to catch my good friend Chris Rice as Baby John!

RENT AT BRISTOL RIVERSIDE

My first ever POP/ROCK musical! I am super excited to be making my BRT debut, especially with a musical I use to blast behind closed bedroom doors in my after school hours growing up. RENT was the first vocal selection book I purchased at 12, singing “Seasons of Love” in my first ever musical theatre class all on my lonesome. This was one of the first musicals I gravitated towards as an awkward young teen and I find it so fascinating that almost every one of my musical theatre peers can sing every lyric and note of this score with me. The music was addicting! It was probably my first contemporary musical obsession, seeing it on Broadway twice by the age of 14 (once with Joey Fatone from N*SYNC), and reading up on Jonathon Larson and RENT’s creation and journey. It is such a revolutionary musical that I feel blessed to be a part of. I’ve always wanted to play “Mark’s Mom” and dance on top of tables! Big thanks to Sheri Saunders, the rock audition guru, for giving me the audition material I used! She’s a must.

RENT runs May 8th-June 3rd! CLICK THIS LINK TO GO TO THE BRT WEBSITE FOR TICKET INFO!

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES with the 11th Hour Theatre Company

A heavenly slice of doo-wop pie! I am happy to announce that I will be assisting Barrymore Nominated choreographer and hip-hop master Samuel Reyes (my choreographer for Walnut Street’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL the past 2 years) in creating the choreography for this adorable musical review. Every rehearsal is going to feel like a sock hop. I am so thrilled to be working with 11th Hour Theatre Company for the first time, one of my favorites in town, and to be expanding myself as a choreographer. I’m really enjoying working on Aladdin Jr. and seeing what my imagination can come up with- its completely rewarding to see it all come to life!

I am also ECSTATIC to announce that I will be swinging “Betty Jean” and “Suzy” during the process, and I’m getting to go on in the final weekend for “Suzy!” R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!!!! I will have exact dates posted as soon as I know! I could not foresee a better way to kick off my summer.

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES runs in the Skybox at the Adrienne Theatre June 1st-25th ! CLICK THIS LINK TO GO TO THE 11TH HOUR WEBSITE FOR TICKET INFO!

BOYFRIEND MAKES PHILADELPHIA DEBUT

This isn’t really my news to post, but damn it, I’m proud and jumping for joy to be having my boyfriend live with me while he does SPRING AWAKENING at the Media Theatre this spring. Its going to wonderful and is exactly what we need as it sometimes gets hard getting to and from Astoria and Philly. I also just have such a love for this show- I can’t wait to see him in it! He gets to jump on tables too!

A SUMMER IN THE CITY

I am really looking forward to be spending my first ever summer in a city this year, choreographing CAMP WALNUT’s FAME JR. at the Walnut Street Theatre, and hopefully taking classes up the wazoo between Philadelphia and New York. Oh yeah, and working! I really love it at the National Constitution Center, especially when it’s sunny out because the whole building shines! I have a lot of personal projects I want to get off and running and may be will plan another cabaret to do! You know me- I can’t stand still for too long. I am looking forward to trips to my hometown, the shore, and may be planning some vacations with the boyfriend and best friends. Disney Land and Prince Edward Island have come to bat. Groupon can you do something about that? I also want to head out to the theatres my friends will be at the summer and applaud their performances! There’s nothing I love better.

MY WALNUT STREET THEATRE MAIN STAGE DEBUT!

Tara Tag’s Understudy Tale

Exhausted on Sunday Night after my one-night only MOUSETRAP!

I don’t think there is anything as nerve wrecking and at the same time adrenaline pumping as understudying. It is an actor’s limbo, just looming in the abyss waiting for this no-guarantee ring to call you on. And even if you do get the news that it is going to happen, you don’t usually go right to jumping HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL style into the air. It usually feels more like panic and instead of butterflies delightfully entering your tummy in this excited anticipation, it’s more like horrifying bats flapping around. But you are alive in every sense. It’s like someone just pressed the fast forward button on your life and you trust the theatre magic to catch you up to speed.

The beginning…(Disclaimer this is long, but I promise entertaining!)

The West End Theatre!

I had hopped onboard THE MOUSETRAP, undoubtedly Agatha Christie’s most popular murder mystery written in 1952 being the longest running play EVER on the West End, a few weeks after it opened as an immediate replacement for the Mollie u/s. Other than having been the reader at auditions for a few of the roles way back in June the previous year, I knew then only what Wikipedia had to offer on the show and had already forgotten most of that. Hahaha-Great. So I threw myself into the whole thing pretty blind due to my jam-packed schedule, but knew I could not pass this opportunity up and would make myself find the time. Thank God I could pull a British accent out of my bag of tricks from doing ARCADIA in college and a bigger thank God that the stage manager, the incredible tour de force Debbi Marcucci, could not be any better in introducing a wide-eyed understudy to the character she is going to play in the yummiest way. She made me hungry to act and it instantly felt good to be involved with a play again. I think the most hilarious thing early on is when I was doing the first read through of the script with Debi the day after I had got it. I asked her before we began if “Mollie” was a huge role. I think Debi let our a hearty chuckle and said, “Girl friend, it’s the lead.” Oh- good to know.

I had about a week and a day to get off book as best as I could and three rehearsals with the understudy cast. I was doing everything possible in that little free time I had to make the lines stick, but boy oh boy, was I getting a run for my money. Especially in Act 2, Mollie pretty much never leaves stage nor shuts up. I called the hardest part of Mollie’s track the Trifecta, engaging in these three back to back to back scenes as if I were acting an Olympic marathon. Those scenes were also pivotal in revealing a lot of the show’s key clues with emotions and suspicions brewing high. No biggie, no biggie.

So the final understudy run through happened and I felt good about Act 1, but hobbled through Act 2 as the lines ricocheted around in my brain. It was a little rough with a lot of line calling, but I had done what I could. I did end up finding fun in it though, really enjoying the play’s twist and turns and the role. But never in million years did I think I was going to go on. So I thought that was that…

About two weeks later, I got notice that the actress I was understudying, who just so happens to be my voice teacher, big sister, and favorite Philly director Miss Jennie Eisenhower, was feeling a little under the weather. Thank God I got that warning. I confess THE MOUSETRAP was not really in my every day thoughts, working on the two school shows and Purim Play, taking class, working, and auditioning, so having that advanced little heads up allowed me to get it back into my brain. I did doubt if it ever was really there, but had no choice. I took the warning very seriously that Friday night and treated it as if I was going on for the Saturday matinee. When 1:30 came around Saturday afternoon and I had no text/call, I passed out on my couch, having been buried in the script all morning. I figured no news was good news to Jennie’s health recovering and I went about my day. I headed out to the Mazeppa Fundraiser that night, the company I worked for last summer, to volunteer my help in setting up and to cheer on the cabaret performance. Just as the cabaret was ready to kick off and about three wine glasses in, I got a three part text from the stage manager that I was more than likely going to be doing one or both of the Sunday shows.

Instant heat took over my body. I think the wine helped. I scurried on out of Mazeppa, explaining to them the situation, and fled home, stopping for coffee and water on the way. I enlisted the help of two best friends Leslie Nevon Holden and Matt Mastronardi to come on over and help me run THE MOUSETRAP in my living room. I was so lucky that both of them rushed to my aid.

Leslie and Matty got me through the whole show that night, stopping to fix the trouble lines and making me laugh as they took on all the accents and got into the murder mystery themselves. I had no official notice by the end of the night, only that I was on call. I woke up early the next morning and did a quiet line through with a delicious breakfast in my neighborhood coffee shop and had my roommate Rachel run my Mt. Everest Act 2 moments in her room. I canceled my day and made it all about THE MOUSETRAP. I had found out that morning I was to be at the Walnut by noon to try on costumes and to start doing a mini- put in just in case with only the stage manager. Nothing official yet, but we were playing it safe.

Fortunately Jennie was able to do that matinee- she’s a true blue professional- so I got to watch the show again. I had only gotten through Act 1 with Debi and only did lines for Act 2 with the ASMS in the green room at half hour, so that was really helpful. After the matinee, I waited like a jittery Jill in the green room for my fate. Was I doing the night show? Was this really going to happen? My knees couldn’t stop knocking. Then Debi came out of Jennie’s dressing room and gave me the thumbs up. “You’re going on.”

And now, everything else is a blur. I know I somehow texted Patrick, Matty, Leslie, and Rachel and called my parents, who were both sick and couldn’t make it, before the dinner break put in. The Walnut ordered pizza and we were off- we had 1 hour and half to get me through everything. The biggest thank you to the cast for being beyond supportive and amazing, all such accomplished actors-Philadelphia stars!-some having Broadway credits, MFAs, Barrymores- things that if I thought about, I was like- what am I doing on stage with these people!!?? They all had my back and made me feel very safe, some of them I was even just meeting for the first time! I seriously couldn’t ask to have a better cast to enter into.

We got through the show and by that time, it was half hour. My hands were so jittery that Jennie’s dresser Deb and the wig designer Meg took complete care of me, getting my hair in pin curls, wig on, and even lipstick as I did everything else on my face and drank gulps of water. No pizza for me and so much love to those ladies for settling my nerves. Then before I knew it, I was at places. Mollie is the first character to enter with all this suspicious business, so I stood in the wings feeling like Judy Garland in THE WIZARD OF OZ after getting her Emerald City hair make over with that wig, clutching my hand bag and not really believing this was happening. Patrick was on his way from NY to be in the audience with a nice handful of my friends who had found out last minute through Jennie’s facebook post- CRAZY TOWN- or that I’M GOING ON! Text I had sent out. Then all of a sudden the announcement had started. The stage right ASM was throwing snow on me since Mollie is coming in from a huge snowstorm, and my dresser was fixing this pink Edie Beale like wrap over my head. I was trying to think of my first line and was just blanking. Then I looked up at the cue light and saw it go out. That’s when something just took over. THEATRE MAGIC. Off I went.

I can’t really remember anything else. I did feel very invested and was even starting to have fun with the scenes I had been confident about. It was like it wasn’t me if that makes any sense; I was so focused that it was almost out of body like I was playing chess with myself. I did almost get knocked out with the curtain at the end of the show-yikes!, but I had made it through pretty smoothly. The cast even gave me my own bow at the end, which I’ll never forget- so surreal. It hadn’t even hit me that I had played a lead on the Walnut main stage just yet. I was just trying so hard not to let anyone down or mess up the story the whole time. When it was over as I was exiting Jennie’s star dressing room, I had to pinch myself.

I had a cheese steak celebration that night with Patrick- who ran from the train station in time to catch the end of Act 1 to the end- and Leslie, Matty, and Nate who had dropped what they were doing to see me go on. Matty even ran to an audition on intermission- an audition in which he eventually booked! It was a theatre magic day. Thank you February 27th!

The Walnut Facebook page wrote up a little post about me that Monday and I went back to normal life the next week. It all had happened so fast and I am so grateful that I got this opportunity and was matched with so much faith and guidance. I could thank that cast and crew forever and my amazing friends for coming together like my family that weekend. Mollie is the biggest role I have ever played haha- I love the Walnut for giving me the chance to continue my growth as a young actress. WOW! I’ll never forget this experience as long as I live.

After curtain call with Judy Garland Oz Curls!

THE BUSY BEE…

The Cabaret Duo MATTY AND ME!

The week before the understudy tale I was in Scranton, performing with Matty the cabaret for my grand parents assistant living home we had thrown together. It was a beautiful weekend, stuffing our face with the best pizza in the world- OLD FORGE pizza is too die for good- and singing our hearts out in the packed lobby before the Sunday Happy Hour and my Pop-Pop and Mom’s joined birthday dinner. So many of my family members I hadn’t seen in forever came out and had the nicest things to say. Matty and I felt like Mickey and Judy and stayed after our finale to continue playing songs on the baby grand at the entertainment director’s request. So many people came over to us to shake our hands and thank us, and assumed we were from Broadway- hilarious! We had this little old man in a wheelchair, Doctor Nick, come over to us and share all his favorite Broadway memories. He had missed our performance because he accidently fell asleep in his room, so Matty and I gladly did our duet numbers again for him and melted at his stunning stories he told about the Broadway Golden Age. He invited us back to his room and gave us some of his old Irving Berlin concerts taped off of TV. He was just too darling, especially when he talked about his love for Julie Andrews! Matty and I just couldn’t get over it!

Now through my mom’s promotion- get it Agent Momma Tag, Matty and I may be doing some more performances at other senior citizen homes and centers down the line. It is definitely a nice outlet that we are excited to continue exploring!

I have also been taking a lot of classes between the Walnut Street Theatre and New York City. I’ve been working with the Walnut Street Theatre Casting Director Kate Galvin on musical theatre auditions and actress/choreographer Ellie Mooney at tackling dance calls weekly, getting the treat to even work with cast members from SISTER ACT on Broadway and the WHITE CHRISTMAS tour. Auditioning is never easy, so I just feel it is important to always be working on it and this definitely in the most fun way possible! I also took another class with Stage Door Connections, this time learning the HOW TO SUCCEED…Revival Dance call with the Associate Choreographer Chris Bailey (my back is still sore), and with the new Growing Studio in New York meeting and working with Casting Director Benton Whitely from Duncan Stewart Casting. I always learn something new that I can start applying to my audition confidence!

*

Aladdin Jr. is also well on its way (I’m excited to get some double-dutch happening in “Friend Like Me”) as well as Annie Jr., both mentioned in my previous blog. The Purim Play I assisted WST teaching artist and actress Heidi Hayes on out in Wynnewood, PA at the Main Line Temple was a major success! Our cast of MY FAIR ESTER (parody of MY FAIR LADY) all rose to the occasion, hamming up their already hilarious characters and committing like pros. They were all just dolls to laugh the Wednesday night rehearsals away with, reminding me always of why I love theatre. I look forward to working with them again in the future!

This is an exciting spring!

All I need is for my allergies to hold their horses, and my smile will never fade. I can’t wait to embrace this city with my boyfriend in our days off together, throw parties with my amazing roommates, whip out my dresses, and enjoy the warmer weather! Thank you for reading my blog- I love sharing all this and loving reading the blogs of all my friends.

I’ll leave you with my Walnut Street Theatre Adopt a School Performance of “Shy” from ONCE UPON A MATTRESS! Happy Spring and I hope to share it in some way with you!

Hop On Board Tara Tag’s Good Ship Lollipop!

(I know this is a tad bit late, but)

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!!

I had a grand time waving good-bye to good ole 2011 in Arizona, celebrating the arrival of a new year and all its possibilities under a warm desert sky. It was a beyond heavenly vacation to my boyfriend Patrick’s home state where the sun was a radiant king for our week stay and a light sweater was all that we needed for our daily escapades. Our week was filled with hilarious board and card game nights with Patrick’s family, delicious home cooked meals, morning runs about Patrick’s neighborhood that reminded me of a Disney World resort, home videos against Patrick’s will, a trip to the Mesa Temple to see the massive Christmas Light display- SEE BELOW, fireworks and bonfires in the streets New Year’s Eve- so Legal there!, coffee shop dates on a ranch watching the sun slip elegantly away, unbeatable Mexican cuisine, a trip to Tucson to see Patrick’s college campus (STUNNING!), shopping and walking about Phoenix (I got a onesie decorated in whoopee pies for 4 bucks!!), and of course I couldn’t miss it- THE GRAND CANYON. I think throwing in a wonder of the world to our trip destined it to be beyond magical. Arizona was just an indescribable blessing, a refreshing break from the fast pace bounce between NY and Philly Patrick and I manage on top of auditioning and working. It was pretty hard for us to hop a plane back to the craziness that is our every day life, but without a doubt, we both felt refueled and ready for a new year.

Mesa Temple=Christmas Wonderland!

And boy oh boy do I have a year in store for me…

I CAN’T READ MUSIC!

–a tara tag cabaret learned by ear-

I don’t know what possessed me one December morning, while sipping my coffee and scrolling Backstage and Playbill for jobs, to go on a whim and submit to this production company seeking solo cabaret acts. It must have been some unexplainable surge of confidence that simply saw I had nothing to lose, typing away a package of ideas and looking ahead into the New Year with great gusto! Well, I’m glad that I happened to feel like a queen that day for this whim has now blossomed into a true blue reality!

On 7 pm March 24th at the Duplex in New York City’s West Greenwich Village with JD Productions, I will be making my one-woman cabaret debut in an delightful evening celebrating a handful of my favorite lady performers, whom all claimed they could not read a single note when they landed in show business! These are also the dazzling women that have fashioned me into the performer I am today, most likely to blame for the old soul I possess in the Golden Age of musical theatre comedy. Lets just say I had no hope to ever be an ingénue and was fated a character actress right off the bat!

In preparation, I have been on a wild goose chase collecting the musical gems I hope to fill the night with (so much of it is out of print- but I am determined!) and have created a library of memoirs and biographies to get me more acquainted with my fabulous ladies. I feel like I’m back in school in an amazing way, staying up all night to finish a chapter that’s got me hooked, jotting down notes and connections I find between the 5 women I have chosen, and just generally filled with excitement to be learning all while letting lose and challenging myself as performer. You have got to make your own opportunities- its my 2012 feat!

I don’t want to give away much more except to encourage you to please come and share this experience with me! There will be Dirty Shirleys to kick back- I promise!- and a performance that is coming from the bottom of my heart! I hope to see you there!

A Huge Thank You to Miss Kellyn Uhl for her photography genius!

.the PHILLY life.

Walnut Street Theatre’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL rehearsals and performances completely made my holiday season a merry dream as well as the tree decorating party my roommates and I had! Our living room looked like an arts and crafts fair gone mad and our tree got completely spoiled by our friends’ outstanding creativity! It always pays to have friends who are artists. I also made the local papers in an advertisement for A CHRISTMAS CAROL, placed right on the spread in beauteous pink caroler garb next to none other than Billy Elliot (who’s tour was at the Academy of Music this past December)! SEE BELOW. That’s one for the scrapbook! I was lucky to have friends from all over Philly and even NY come out to catch the show and to go home to Jersey with Patrick for one of the best ever Christmas Eves. I believe the board game BE A BROADWAY STAR is a must among every theatre geek and musical loving family. I got it as a gift from my Aunt Maureen and we could not stop cracking up when we played it. Of course Patrick and I lost to my unstoppable Tony Award winning family. Lose $150 to a vocal coaching, Lose $10 at Starbucks before big audition- sounds about right! Haha- So genius! Then on Christmas Day, I got to travel up to Scranton to be with my other set of grandparents in their new assistant living home that even has it’s own house dog named Clark to greet you when you come in! I was glad I got to see a huge chunk of my family before heading to Arizona, and once again, am blessed to have them so close to me for my favorite time of year!

Right now, I indeed have my hands full back in Philly, working on two middle-school productions as well as a Visitors Experience Host at the National Constitution Center! I always hope to be interactive with children through out my career and am thrilled to be working on the Independence Mall strip in my first day job as well! I also just got surprised with an understudy opportunity at the Walnut (it’s been a line cramming weekend!), am performing in a cabaret for the Walnut, doing a teaching residency at an all boys school through the Walnut, assisting last year’s MT teacher at the Nut Heidi Hayes on an outside project, and am taking classes on scholarship as well at their Theatre School. Did I ever stop being an apprentice? Haha! I also monitored the Philly EPA and appointments (reader as well) for Pennyslvannia Shakespeare Festival, which was a blast for me. I can totally see myself being an Equity monitor when I’m old and gray, cracking jokes and reading peoples specials skills on their resumes non stop. :-)

A deeper look…

I am the Walnut’s Adopt-A-School Chester A. Arthur’s choreographer for ALADDIN, JR, which of course, has me pumped! The kids blew the dance call out of the water, one jumping ahead of the breadline, and have requested I add some hip-hop flavor to the moves. Well, that’s a whole new world (hehe!) for me, but I am up for the challenge! I also can’t stop humming “Arabian Nights.”

Through iTheatrics, a branch of Musical Theatre International, and in promotion of NBC’s SMASH, I am happy to be the project advisor for their Make a Musical program in Philly at Independence Charter School! Such a great gig! I’ll be assisting the directing team in their first ever school musical of ANNIE, JR., which will be going up in June. I think its so funny that the Jr. productions exist now because thinking back on my middle school shows, we made you sit in Anatevka for over 3 hours in our full length FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and did not cut a scene or song from THE SOUND OF MUSIC or ANNIE either. You bet your bottom dollar “Hooverville” was in! When I watch home videos of those productions, I usually have to fast forward the scene changes for a few minutes to get to the next scene. God bless our parents to sit through it all! So I definitely think Junior versions are brilliant! CLICK ME FOR INFORMATION ON ITHEATRICS!

I just started at the National Constitution Center and see it as a wonderful opportunity to be involved with a unique experience Philly has to offer! What a perfect place to be at during the presidential campaign too; it will force me to engage more politically, which is one of my New Years resolutions. I love wandering the center and traveling through the constitution’s origin to today in American history. Our country is pretty inspiring; I really love reading up on the individuals who called upon change, finding their freedom in the WE THE PEOPLE gift our country has given us. I sometimes forget how lucky we are. I also can’t wait for the Bruce Springsteen exhibit to open- I get a sneak preview in two weeks! CLICK ME FOR INFO ON THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER- COME VIST ME!

A Little Performing…

I will be singing “Shy” from ONCE UPON A MATTRESS in a fundraiser sponsored by the Walnut called A WHOLE NEW WORLD AT ARTHUR at the Adopt-A-School tomorrow night February 6th. Show is at 7pm and is located on 20th and Catherine in the school’s auditorium. Come on out and support! There will be a preview of ALADDIN, JR!

I also became the understudy for “Mollie Ralston” in THE MOUSETRAP at the Walnut St. Theatre, played by one of my Philly favorites Jennie Eisenhower, this week and have been trying to catch up to speed. I haven’t done a British accent in a while, so that’s really fun, and I adore murder mysteries thanks to being obsessed with CLUE as a child. So much gasping and finger pointing- its brilliant! CLICK ME FOR INFO ON THE MOUSETRAP AT THE WALNUT UNTIL MARCH 4TH!

On February 19th, my mom and my pop-pop’s shared birthday, I am travelling down to Scranton with fellow partner in crime Matthew Mastronardi to perform a cabaret in their honor as a public performance for my grandparent’s entire living community. We are on their entertainment calendar! I am lovingly calling the cabaret MATTY AND ME, and am most looking forward to our rousing sing-a-long of THE SOUND OF MUSIC’S “The Lonely Goatherd,” SEUSSICAL’S “Notice Me Horton” changed to “Notice Me Matty” Duet, and our “Sunshine Medley” combining my pop-pop’s favorite tune to sing to me “You are My Sunshine” with BIG RIVER’S “Waiting for the Light to Shine.” Matty will be on the piano and there will also be a guest performance by none other than Sharon Tagliaferro. I think this event would sell out if we brought it on the road!

Scranton Cabaret Stars of MATTY AND ME!

.the NYC Life.

Auditions, auditions, auditions.

Many not even seen at due to union rules and the jam-packed nature. It’s truly a tough time to be in theatre today. This is when I try to see holding rooms (where you sit and wait before your audition) as a place to reconnect with my friends from summer stock and college as the alternative to getting anxious or annoyed in a crowded sea of people. But in good news, the ones I’ve been seen at have gone well, and I will just keep plugging away until one bites! I’m building my rep book, seeing vocal coaches Sheri Saunders for pop/rock material to start busting out and Rosemary Loar while on my stays in the Big Apple. These two women have been more than helpful. I also have been taking dance classes at Steps and Broadway Dance Center, which feels amazing, and am falling more in love with my boyfriend’s neighborhood in Astoria. I don’t even mind my Mega Bus and Bolt Bus rides into New York, seeing it as a 2-hour time block to get things done. Thanks to the bus I’ve gotten through one of my memoirs, and two Harry Potters- Patrick got me the whole series for Christmas! PS Cannot wait for the HUNGER GAMES movie!!!!!

.other stuff.

My favorite time out from all this busy life of traveling to and fro is to go see my friends rock it out in the productions they are in. Kelsey "Kiki" Thompson was as sophisticated and brassy as they come on the DAMN YANKEES tour- I got to see their first performance!- and my Philly friends in the casts of 11th Hour’s ORDINARY DAYS, Walnut Studio 3’s PROOF, and Bristol Riverside’s GYPSY, were all exquisite and extraordinary theatre experiences. I also got to see the incomparable Audra MacDonald at the Kimmel Center in Concert and was overwhelmed by her magnificent presence and talent. I never wanted it to be over!

Kiki in her wig and Me!

I filmed PSA sketches for my friends from college Ari Frankel and Dave Murgittroyd's company, one being able to be viewed on YouTube! CLICK ME TO WATCH! It was actually a lot of fun and I got to hang with people I wish I saw way more than I do now. Ari is moving to LA and I wish him all the luck!

Lastly, here is a throwback to my fall production of CHICAGO at the Media Theatre! I miss being a murderess. ;-)

Geez Louise.

My brain is in boot camp right now with all the lyrics and lines stumbling around, but it’s always a blessing to be busy because you don’t have time to be afraid. Thank god for the love around me.

Here we go 2012!

Much Love,

Nowadays as a Merry Murderess

pop. SIX. squish. uh-uh. cicero. lipshitz

On September 6th, I shimmied right on into rehearsals for CHICAGO at the Media Theatre, closing my summer stock season only two days prior. From the very first staging of "ALL THAT JAZZ," I knew this production was going to be very special and a personal challenge for “strong mover” Tara as my jaw dropped watching all the fierce SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE worthy tricks this company could flawlessly do. I felt like Dorothy when she steps off her front porch into Oz for I definitely wasn’t in Kansas anymore. This was going to be new territory for me. I stood there knees knocking in my worn out character shoes, praying that at the very least my flexibility could flop out a split. I had a lot to live up to, so I raised the stakes and got my first pair of shiny black La Douca’s (ELIZABETHS!). Step 1 in feeling like a Fosse goddess.

ALL THAT JAZZ with Sam Shep (Dance Captain Beauty) and Jocelyn Issac (My Personal Faute Turn Coach :-) )
EYES!

Rehearsals ran at a wicked pace, for CHICAGO is just one big production number after the other. We had a lot to learn with a majority of the choreography being based off of our own improvisations and creativity, making for a truly collaborative process. The sweat dripped, the bunions formed, and the muscles worked hard each day, lucky to have a big bowl of pasta and DANCE MOM episodes waiting for me afterwards. It was exhausting, but of course amazing. I felt electrified by both our team of directors and casts’ talents. I even began reading THE GIRLS OF MURDER CITY by Douglas Perry, an in depth book covering the true trials and events that inspired the musical. I loved slipping away into this sinful 1920s underworld, quite an unbelievable era of sensational crime. And these women at its core, driven by passion to the edge, are not the typical musical theatre leading ladies. There are darker pasts and this thrill of danger within all of them. They are stunning creatures of the night, providing plenty of meat to chew on for us ladies in rehearsals. YESSSSSS!

The original "Roxie Hart" inspiration- Miss Beulah Annan, photographed after shooting her lover in 1924

She played the song "Hula Lou," which is in our pre-show music, over and over again in the hours after she shot and watched her lover die

I also have to say that I just love this cast plain and simple. It started pretty early on and it still going strong today in all our backstage shenanigans and our strong commitment to the show. It feels like family and we spend most our time laughing when we are not on stage (maybe even a little bit onstage too-sshhh!). I will always be eternally grateful to the sexy ladies of the chorus for always helping a sister out with the more difficult moves, especially our dance captain Sam Shep and choreographer Jenn Rose. I’ve become a better dancer because of it and am so happy to have had this opportunity. Its swell, isn’t it?

"The main characters are backed up by a fabulous ensemble of dancers/actors, who move through the show with athleticism and energy. The female ensemble is especially impressive—their opening number in the Cook County Jail, “Cell Block Tango,” is always a show-stopper."

The Cast of CHICAGO with Director Jennie Eisenhower on Opening Night

Opening Night with the stunning sweetheart Jess Latshaw (Miss POP in the show), who just so happens to have her own wonderful blog, THIS LIFE IN WRITING. I love everything she has to say, so check out. Jess is also the Velma cover, so her and I can be found every night back stage doing “NOWADWAYS” and “THE HOT HONEY RAG” full out wherever we can find the room. Jess is ALSO teaching me to play the ukulele, a new hobby I’m taking on! It’s a pretty awesome friendship on and off stage as POP and SIX are indeed cell buddies. <3.

up next.

That is totally me in the pink from last year's production!

I am so pleased to announce that I will be returning to the Walnut Street Theatre to be in A CHRISTMAS CAROL again!! I will be Mrs. Cratchit/Others this time around as well as the Dance Captain. This production was a gift to be in last year and let me release all my crazy Christmas spirit energy. This show will awesomely mark my 1-year friendship with Matt Mastonardi, meeting in last year's cast and now someone I cannot imagine Philly without-our 4th show together!! I also get to be working with CHICAGO director Jennie Eisenhower again on this project, another person in Philly who means the world to me. I already am excited about this cast and creative team, including the 2011-2012 acting apprentices- WOOO!-, and being back at the theatre that was home base all of last year. I also cannot wait to put on a hoop skirt again. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

ARIZONA FOR THE NEW YEAR

I'm also happy to announce that I will be bringing in 2012 with my boyfriend and his amazing family in Arizona, his home state. Its my first trip to the West Coast (with a possible day trip to California) and I am beyond excited! I hope I catch that sunset and see the Grand Canyon too! Thank you so much to Patrick's parents, Maureen and Steve Roberts, for flying me out!

other wonderful stuff.

*I recently hopped an early train to Princeton, NJ to be a part of the McCarter Theatre Center’s Youth Ink! Day O' Play Readings hosted at West Windsor Plainsboro High School South. I felt pretty at home walking into a high school again, instantly flooded with memories from my adventure filled Outreach Tour days at the first whiff of tater tots- pretty magical.

I spent the day with fellow actors from Philly and NY being cast in 10-minute plays written by the students of WWPHSS, the majority of these young playwrights hearing their words for the first time come off the page. These students had been fine-tuning their plays under the nourishment and support of McCarter teaching artists for a few weeks and all had solid first drafts to offer. I had a blast reading a range of works and offering encouraging feedback to the students. The Youth Ink! Program at the McCarter is quite exceptional, something I wish I had to unleash my restless imagination as a teen as I was always writing in journals, too embarrassed to share my stories/ideas. I noticed every play written definitely had a unique voice and was unafraid to delve deep, which is such a courageous quality to bring out of these students. I think this program uncovered a lot of hidden talents and I applaud the McCarter for that! I held onto copies of the scripts the students gave me and am still fascinated by some of the stories, issues, and themes they went to tackle. It was a great way to spend otherwise an ordinary Thursday!

*I also did another reading for the Education Office at the Walnut Street Theatre for Walnut’s staff and a group of 40 middle school students of the newly written outreach play, ONLY 13. It was another rewarding experience and I was even interviewed via flip cam by one of the students in attendance in how to overcome bullying. I will always support Walnut’s Education office in all the new plays they add to their Outreach repertoire. The responses these plays get out of kids, hitting hard on important social and educational issues, are tremendous.

Congratulations to Tom Quinn, the Director of Education and the playwright!

*I am a Groupon/Living Social Deals addict, as I’m racking up the cheap yoga classes, museum trips, and massages. I just started my yoga classes at Power Yoga Works and cannot wait to accomplish a headstand. My massage is my treat for closing CHICAGO :-).

*An adorable couple on the New York City subway told me in passing that I reminded them of Imogene Coca. Total compliment for she’s an old school, wacky comedienne! And she rocked that bob. Started watching her on YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS with Sid Ceasar. Yes YouTube!

Imogene is the best name I think I've ever heard. I wish we were besties.

*Thanks to the boyfriend Patrick Roberts, I am now very much invested in Harry Potter after we watched all the films together. I did read the first book and a half of the second back in middle school, but somehow fell out of the series and never recovered. I’ve remained clueless all these years and it feels so good to finally understand Potter references and terminology. No longer in the dark! I am happy to say while watching the films I predicted all of the romances and Snape came out on top as my favorite character. I also plan to use Julie Walter’s “Mrs. Weasley” as inspiration for my Mrs. Cratchit. Patrick is going to re-read the series with me this winter after I finish THE HUNGER GAMES, which I’ve just begun. I feel like I’m in an exciting Book Club. PS I’m always looking for recommendations!

*I have been sneaking in amazing theatre on off days from CHICAGO in Philadelphia, highlights including 11th Hour’s THE BOMBITY OF ERRORS (peed my pants laughing), Arden Theatre Company’s AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (my favorite play of all time!), my old college’s A CHORUS LINE (Get it MSU!), 213’s YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE (old fashion vaudeville splendor), and CHITA RIVRA: MY BROADWAY at Bristol Riverside. Okay, Chita just knocked it out of the park- I sobbed and had a theatrical rebirth watching her. I saw Chita a few days before we opened CHICAGO and it was exactly what I needed to give me the sexy confidence needed. That woman is a living legend of musical theatre. I nearly died when she blew a kiss to the air for Gwen at the end of her performance of NOWADWAYS- so beautiful. Her stories, her passion, her singing, her strutting, and the one battement she wacked in there will stay with me forever. I love Broadway dames; they are a special breed. No one makes 'em like that anymore.

*I’ve been scoring deals on the Mega and Bolt buses- finally getting my first dollar tickets- to visit my boyfriend in NY and audition/take class. I took the CHICAGO Audition Technique master class taught by Melissa Mahon, the current “Go-to-Hell-Kitty” and one of five women in the world to play all female roles in the Broadway CHICAGO, at Stage Door Connections. This woman IS CHICAGO. I had a blast and was just in awe of all the detail Melissa shared with us on Fosse and his motivations. We learned ALL THAT JAZZ and THE HOT HONEY RAG within two hours and I discovered less is so more. I look forward to taking more classes like this through Stage Door Connections.

Coolest News Update....

New Roomies Andrew and Rachel and Our Pumpkins!

I made my big move mid September with college chum and recent Barrymore Award winning actress Rachel Camp (so proud!) and our new friend Andrew to the Passayunk Square neighborhood of South Philadelphia. Our new home, nicknamed Grimmauld Place (which I now finally get), is a treasure with an apple tree and fire pit in our astounding backyard. Our backyard seriously gets mistaken for a city park- its out of this world! I fell very much in love with my new home and neighborhood- a solid mixture of young hipsters and Italian grandmas-and seriously couldn’t be happier. We already had a Pumpkin Carving House Warming and a Mini All the Jazz Halloween Party to celebrate fall festivities with Philly loves. I look forward to the upcoming holidays with my wonderful roommates and to making our new house feel more and more like home.

My Grandparents in Scranton, PA- Are they not the cutest?

Also, I just wanted to say how much I love my family and how much I wish I was with them right now. My grandmom, Rita Bubernak, recently had a stroke and is on her way to recovery, and my Pop-Pop, Harry Bubernak, has been hospitalized as well for needed medical procedures. Both in the same hospital, they are pulling through and holding each others' hands while resting. My mom and dad have been back and forth between PA and NJ and always have found time to call me each day, AND have even seen my show three times. I swear I have the best family in the world. I can't wait for the holidays to see all of them. I am blessed to be 24 with both sets of grandparents alive and beautiful. My family has given me irreplaceable memories. LOVE.

That is just about it.

I’m beginning to dream of a White Christmas (that snow right before Halloween totally egged me on) and am already getting together my holiday card mailing list. I’m also looking forward to scheduling more classes in Philly and New York before the year lets out. In trying something new and random- I’m going to submit for the reality TV show WORST COOKS OF AMERICA. I mean, why not? Also if you really know me, you know I’m a perfect candidate. I mess up Lean Cuisines.

I miss my amazing friends from summers past and college, which now seems so long ago. A lot of my friends are off and about on national tours, regional theatres all over the country, and living the dream in the Big Apple. I’m always missing and thinking of you all and how you all have shaped me.

I’ll leave you with this picture that served as a Facebook default for a little while. I live to work with the people I love again and again and I thank God for always bringing those cherished ones back into my life. I hope to get some AT THE BALLET footage on here that Patrick shot backstage from this production of A CHORUS LINE. He makes a few appearances lip-syncing that crack me up.

A CHORUS LINE with Favorites Kelsey Thompson and Andrea Doto

My best to all of you and stay warm as the weather chills. Look at Norman Rockwell paintings and get pumped for the holidays!
